I couldn’t believe it. Mrs. Kikyo actually took away my letter without me being able to change the wording. I knew I had to do something to avoid embarrassment.
“Mrs. Kikyo,” I begged. “I need my letter back!” “Why Shouji,”she stared blankly. “What’s the matter with it?” She looked over it as if trying to find any hint of a mistake. I was shivering like mad as I knew my face was a damned cherry. How could Mrs. Kikyo do this to me?
The final bell rang as I grabbed all of my possessions and ran away from the school like I was struck by lightning. I wanted to crawl underneath the nearest rock and hide from the world. I couldn’t reach my house in time enough because it felt like time itself has slowed around me.
“So what’s she like,” Pandora asked that night at practice. “Is she awesome?” “Damn, I don’t know.” I answered with a bit of a pissed attitude.
Pandora is the bassist of our band, the Sandstorm. Her brother, Specter, is our drummer and we’ve been together since the 6th grade.
“But you did say that she plays the guitar,” Specter just had to add. “Yeah,” I said. “What does that have to do with anything?” “So,” he twirled his drumstick. “Why don’t you invite her to join us? You never know, she may be able to help get us better gigs.” “And I told you,” I yelled. “ I am the only guitarist in this band and there is to be no other!” Both of them looked away as we practiced out setlist for that evening.
The next week Mrs. Kikyo was more jittery than a centipede as she announced that the letters from our pen pals were in. I was actually pretty hesitant to open my letter as I still saw nothing exciting about this project. Mrs. Kikyo walked by my desk and gave me a cold stare that sent shivers down my spine.  So I picked up the lavishly wrapped envelope and carefully opened it. The letter read as such:
Dear Shouji,
Hi, it’s finally good to here from you. I saw the picture of your band and I was actually astonished at how good that guitar looks around you. Who knows, maybe we can get together and have a rock session some day. I was thinking that maybe you would like to come and play for me. Enclosed within this letter is my address and phone number.
Yours truly,
Megumi Okinawa.
“So I was right,” I jumped at the sound of  Mrs. Kikyo’s voice. “You’re starting to realize that  I was right all along.” “That proves nothing,” I said jumping to a defensive stage. “Then why is your face so red?” she winked and walked away.
I banged my head against the table, damning my light complexion for betraying me once again. But of course something inside of me started snapping into something different. I had never had this feeling take over yet for some odd reason it felt right. The final bell rang and I rushed home, this time with a lot of enthusiasm. I ran straight into the living room and picked up the phone. From there I dialed Megumi’s number and waited. Finally someone picked up and a voice said, “Hello?”
